“Courageous Collaboration”

New for 2017, this Conference and Exhibition is being hosted in conjunction with HR Services for Schools, a traded service of Birmingham City Council.

Open to all schools in Birmingham and surrounding areas, this one-day event promises to provide Head teachers, Business Managers and Senior Leaders with an interesting and informative day full of new ideas to take back into their school settings.

The event will take place in the excellent facilities of the Gallery at the NEC in Birmingham and will include a Conference with keynote speaker and workshops and an exhibition where up to 50 education suppliers will be displaying their latest products and services.

Sir John Jones will be the keynote speaker and full details of the three workshops can be found below.

Diane Rance & Marian Hubble – Creating Value with People

Time and energy is wasted avoiding difficult conversations or managing the repercussions of not nipping inappropriate behaviours in the bud. This session is designed to help you to have “Tricky Conversations” in the workplace to address

• Performance concerns
• Inappropriate behaviours
• Attendance and timekeeping issues

The session will help you to

• Prepare for these conversations
• Use questions and listening techniques effectively
• Structure feedback
• Manage your emotions as well as respond to the other person’s emotions
• Record agreed actions and develop a plan, including a review process
This will be an interactive session with opportunities for practice. Please bring along an example of
• a real issue you’d like to resolve or
• a conversation you’ve held and wonder how you could have managed it better.

1b. “The Humble Art of Delegation”

Nickii Messer – School Business Management and Leadership

Are you feeling overworked? Do you never seem to have time for strategic planning? Do you want to delegate but just don’t know how or where to start? Do you avoid delegation because it’s quicker to do it yourself – and, let’s face it, no-one will ever do it quite as well as you will?

In this fun and interactive workshop, Nickii will explore how humble delegation can support courageous collaboration, leading to organisational and personal success.

By mastering the art of delegation, you can increase your own productivity as well as enabling sustainability and succession planning for you and the school

A guide to strategically planning your school work force including input on employment issues from the HR Services for Schools Employees Relations team, managing your school finances with the Schools Financial Services team and additional support from the BEP.

Diane Rance

Diane began her career in the car industry, in Employee Relations, where she first developed her skills around handling “Tricky Conversations”, before moving into a strategic HR role. She now works independently as a qualified Executive Coach and Mentor, and continues to support people who are handling “Tricky Conversations”. Diane is a mentor at Aston Business School and has been a Governor at a primary school and a sixth form college
Marian Hubbell

Marian Hubbell

Marian is a specialist in the written and spoken word and has a talent for supporting others to grow in confidence, tackle challenges and increase their motivation and influence. With a background in managing HR and training in the public sector, she is an Accredited Trainer of NLP and is currently studying Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy at Warwick University.

Nickii Messer

Nickii formed her company, All The Geese, in 2009 to specialise in training, developing, and promoting school business management and leadership. A well-known national and international conference speaker, author, and contributor to educational publications, and with many years’ experience as a school business leader across three school phases, Nickii was instrumental in working with the National College to launch the SBM role and associated training programmes. Nickii is intensely aware of the ever-growing pressure on school business professionals (particularly over the past two years or so) and is keen to help colleagues at all levels develop the skills and confidence to embrace the ever more complex challenges we face whilst still, crucially, looking after our own wellbeing. One of the most entertaining, inspiring and sought-after speakers on the global educational stage, his achievements and reputation for straight-talking, leadership and creativity have led him to be invited on to a number of panels and think-tanks including the National College for School Leadership, the DfES’ Leadership Development Unit, the Teacher Development Agency’s National Remodelling Unit and visiting posts with both Manchester and Liverpool Universities.
