Leeds City Council Primary and Secondary SEN 2025 Conference and Exhibition

Executive Functions; our amazing brains

Mondale Events and Leeds City Council are delighted to be organising this one day Conference and Exhibition. Head Teachers, SEN Co-ordinators and Intervention Managers from Leeds schools who have already signed up for SENCo networks and conferences package (SLA) are being invited to attend this popular conference.

Our theme this year is Executive Functioning. The ‘Executive Functions’ are mental processes that direct our thoughts, actions and emotions particularly during active problem solving. They are the skills that underpin learning and form the basis for the problem-solving skills of everyday living. The executive functions are responsible for controlling emotional responses, thereby allowing for more effective problem solving.

Our keynote speaker Victoria Bagnall from Connections in Mind will explore developing a ‘shared Executive Functioning literacy’ whereby as practitioners we create a shared and consistent understanding and language around EF. Victoria will also deliver a workshop on ‘Mental Contrasting’, a cognitive strategy used to enhance motivation and goal attainment.

We will also have a presentation from Dr. Monica Negoita, Consultant Community Paediatrician, on perinatal and early life medical risk factors and their potential impact on academic progress, behaviour and executive function.

Two staff per school are invited: head teachers, senior leaders or SENCOs for the morning session and SENCOs for the full day, including a range of workshops to support you in your practice, many of which build on the themes of executive functions. Full workshop details and programme are available here. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day together with a buffet lunch for those delegates staying all day.
