Learning Maths: Getting the most out of Assessment
The 2020 Virtual Mathematics Conference will be an unmissable, one-day event for teachers and leaders to come together and examine best practice for supporting the learning of mathematics. This year the conference will focus on assessment and how this forms an integral part of a mastery model of learning.
Held in a virtual environment for the first time, delegates will hear from leading experts, widen their professional network, have an opportunity to reflect upon their current practice and receive valuable insights and resources to improve mathematics teaching and learning within their school. The event will be a fun, interactive professional development opportunity for all phases of mathematics education.
Leeds for Learning has long held a strong reputation for delivering the highest quality teaching and training within the region, working closely with schools and colleges to understand the issues they’re facing and deliver practical solutions and advice. This conference is open to education professionals from all across the country who wish to expand their expertise and develop a best practice approach.

- Mark McCourt – the UK’s leading expert on teaching for mastery approaches
- Jonathan Hall – creator of ‘Mathsbot.com’, leading mathematics practitioner and a teaching and learning specialist for The Learning Partnership
- Gareth Metcalfe – Director of I See Maths, working with schools to put reasoning and problem-solving at the heart of mathematical learning
The keynote sessions will address the implications for all schools and settings of successfully embedding a mastery model for learning and discuss how assessment is key to its success.
There will also be a comprehensive programme of workshops available for delegates to attend throughout the day, facilitated by local and regional school practitioners and independent organisations West Yorkshire Maths Hub and Pearson Edexcel. Full details of all workshops can be found below.
Delegates will be able to access most of the conference materials, including recordings of some keynotes and workshops, for a year following on from the event. They can be viewed at a convenient time and used flexibly to coordinate with schools or settings current context, so a full day of cover isn’t required. Pre-recorded workshops will be available to view from the 10th November 2020.
- The cost per delegate is £120. Additional places will be charged at a discounted rate of £100.
- Schools who have a service level agreement with Leeds City Council Learning Improvement Team will pay a reduced rate of £100.
- Secondary Leading Learning Partnership (LLP) schools have one prepaid place at this event.
- Schools will be invoiced directly from Leeds City Council following registration on this site.

Event Speakers
Gareth Metcalfe
Gareth is the Director of I See Maths. He aims to inspire a deep, flexible understanding of mathematics through rich, diverse learning experiences. A former Assistant Headteacher, Gareth currently works with a range of schools, teaching classes from Nursery to Year six, helping to put reasoning and problem-solving at the heart of mathematical learning. He holds the NCETM Charter Standard for CPD and has written a range of teaching resources including the ‘I See Reasoning’ eBooks. Jonathan Hall
Jonny has vast experience in mathematics teaching having taught secondary maths for over 13 years and counting. A former head of department, he is currently the lead practitioner at Leeds City Academy where he inspires students to get excited about learning mathematics. Jonny has also recently joined the Leading Learning Partnership team as a teaching and learning specialist. Having a keen interest in the development of online resources to advance learning, he created the StudyMaths and FlashMaths websites, and later founded the popular online tutor resources FormTimeIdeas.com. His latest project is the MathsBot.com website, where he offers the creation of virtual manipulatives and teaching tools to use in the classroom.
Karen Knepper
Karen’s current role is as a school improvement consultant with a focus on primary mathematics. Following Bachelor of Education (Hons) and Masters in Education degrees, she has taught all ages, from reception to adults. Karen developed her expertise in mathematics through the numeracy specialist qualification and through my various teaching roles, an adult mathematics tutor in prisons, mathematics teacher and more recently working with the Maths Hubs and being involved in the recent developments in mathematics education brought from Shanghai and Singapore. She is also a professional development lead for the National Centre for Excellence in the teaching of mathematics (NCETM). Karen works alongside leadership teams across the region to drive forward school improvement and has a track record of improving outcomes for children.
Kate Henshall
Kate is the Primary Maths Advisor for Trinity MAT, leading on improving mathematics for the primary schools within Trinity MAT. She is also the Assistant Maths Hub Lead for West Yorkshire Maths Hub leading on Teaching for Mastery Work Groups across Bradford, Calderdale and Leeds with a particular focus on Sustaining Teaching for Mastery and Mastering Number. Kate also works closely with the External Initiatives teams within Trinity MAT; White Rose Maths and Trinity Institute of Education. Kate has supported White Rose Maths to develop their schemes of learning, premium resources, assessment materials and CPD courses. Kate has also worked with Pearson to develop content for Power Maths.
Kully Richardson
Kully has worked in the field of education since 1995, undertaking the role of class teacher, numerous subject leader positions, deputy headteacher, headteacher and primary school consultant. She has worked across a number of authorities before settling in Leeds, and has taught from Nursery to Y6 and enjoy working with teachers and leaders across all phases. Through public speaking, training staff and running workshops on a wide variety of topics related to education, she has been able to develop and pass on skills that can be used effectively in all aspects of school. She have been involved in working parties linked to assessment, literacy, maths and early years Qualifications: BA Hons, PGCE, PG Diploma [Leadership and Management in Education], NPQH, AST in Assessment for Learning, Accredited KS2 Lead Moderator and KS1 Moderator: 2019, 2020, Accredited Word Aware Trainer: 2019, Accredited Numicon Trainer.
Mark McCourt
The UK’s leading expert on the mastery approach, Mark is a leading figure in mathematics education, and has led many large-scale government education initiatives, both in the UK and overseas. Mark was a Director at the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and has also been a school leader, an Advanced Skills Teacher, a school inspector and a teacher trainer. He founded and was Chairman of the Teacher Development Trust and he is the CEO of Complete Mathematics, the UK’s largest network of mathematics teachers. He has extensive experience of mathematics teaching and learning across all age and ability groups, having taught students from age 3 to PhD.
Sarah Chamings
Sarah Chamings is a Learning Improvement Consultant and is part of Leeds City Council’s Learning Improvement Team. Before this she has been an AST for mathematics, a head of mathematics in a large secondary school and a senior leader. Sarah currently works in a school improvement capacity for two local schools and still teaches whenever she can. She also delivers a wide range of professional development for teachers including for the NCETM and our Leading Learning Partnership
Steph Kirk
Steph is currently Assistant Maths Hub Lead for West Yorkshire Maths Hub. Steph’s focus over the last few years has been transition from primary to secondary, working on several projects for the Hub and school Trust. Steph has a passion for improving maths outcomes at all levels and currently teaches at Cathedral Academy in Wakefield (TES Secondary School of the Year 2019), where maths outcomes last year were some of the best in Yorkshire. Steph started her career as Teach First in Barnsley and is a respected teacher, leader and trainer who has delivered professional development training to teachers across the world.
