Learning Maths: Representation and Structure

The Leeds for Learning 2022 Mathematics Conference will focus on representation and structure and is open to education professionals from all across the country who wish to expand their expertise in teaching and leading a maths curriculum.

Together with Leeds for Learning, we are proud to be welcoming the following keynote and workshop presenters :

  • Mark McCourt – the UK’s leading expert on the mastery approach
  • Dr Chris Pritchard – President of the Mathematical Association 2021-22 and former Chair of the Scottish Mathematical Council
  • Dr Nira Chamberlain – President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications 2020-21
  • Amy How – Author, Presenter, Primary Maths Specialist, SLE and University Professor
  • Prof Anne Watson – Teacher Educator and Researcher at the University of Oxford
  • Dr Sally Bamber – Senior Lecturer at the University of Chester, a leader in the field of teacher education for maths teachers and secretary for the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMET).

The keynote sessions will address The Power of Representations, The Visual in Mathematics Learning and Teaching and The Black Heroes of Mathematics and the content of the comprehensive programme, keynotes and workshops is available here.

Alongside the Conference there will be an exhibition of education suppliers and those companies wishing to exhibit at this popular event should kindly contact us as soon as possible as space is limited at the venue and stands can only be offered on a first come, first served basis.

  • The cost per delegate is £250. Additional places will be charged at a discounted rate of £125.
  • Schools who have a Primary Learning Improvement Package will pay £200. Additional places will be charged at a discounted rate of £100.
  • Primary Maths Package schools have one prepaid place at this event.
  • Leading Learning Partnership Subscription schools have one prepaid place at this event.
  • Schools will be invoiced directly from Leeds City Council following the event.

Amy How

Amy How

Amy is a Canadian who moved to the UK to pursue her dream of spreading the word globally on using the rekenrek. She has been a Primary teacher for 17 years in Canada as well as at an International school in the Netherlands. She has a Masters degree in Education and has taught Bachelor of Education maths courses at Acadia University. Amy is an author, presenter, primary maths specialist, SLE and university professor. She has an infectious passion and enthusiasm for teaching and will keep you engaged and entertained throughout the presentation.
Avril McLeer

Avril McLeer

Avril has vast experience in mathematics teaching, having taught secondary maths in Leeds schools for 20 years. Previously a Lead Practitioner for the SSAT and then a Head of Department for 14 years, she now teaches at Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School and is an Area Co-ordinator for the AMSP. The AMSP aims to increase participation in the advanced maths qualifications - Core Maths, AS/A level Mathematics, and Further Mathematics - and improve the teaching of these qualifications. Avril works with schools across West Yorkshire, running PD sessions and student enrichment events. She aims to inspire students to continue with their study of Mathematics post 16. Avril is passionate about ensuring all students have a positive experience in the Maths classroom and that everyone understands where Maths study can take them!
Dr Chris Pritchard

Dr Chris Pritchard

Dr Pritchard is the 2021-22 President of the Mathematical Association and former Chair of the Scottish Mathematical Council. Chris has written extensively in journals for mathematics teachers and is the author or editor of six books on mathematics and its teaching. He has also been one of the editors of Mathematics in School since 2005. Chris taught for almost 40 years in schools in London and Scotland, much of that time as Head of Department, and with every year that passed he became more and more convinced of the importance of the visual in understanding.
Dr Nira Chamberlain

Dr Nira Chamberlain

Dr Chamberlain was the President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (2020-21), a Visiting Fellow at Loughborough University and the Professional Head of Discipline – Data Science at SNC Lavalin Atkins. In the last 30 years, Dr Chamberlain has worked all over Europe solving complex industrial problems through mathematical modelling. In the last decade, Dr Chamberlain has won the Big Internet Math Off – maths communication title – World’s Most Interesting Mathematician. As well as this, he has been recognised as the Science Council UK’s Top 100 Scientists, Power List 5 th Most Influential Black Person in the UK (2018), The Financial Times Top 100 Most Influential BAME in UK Tech (2019), Honorary member of the Mathematical Association (2020) and will be its President in 2023. Dr Chamberlain the first Black Mathematician to appear in the UK’s Who’s Who since 1849.
Dr Sally Bamber

Dr Sally Bamber

Inclusive mathematics education and transformative teacher education are two of the themes that inform Sally’s work. Following 15 years in secondary mathematics teaching, she moved into teacher education at the University of Chester in 2007. Sally has developed research informed ITE and MA programmes and teaches and supervises on the Doctor of Education programme at the university. Her current research interests are aligned with developments that aim to widen access to HE through collaborative, research-informed lesson design in secondary schools. She is currently part of an Erasmus+ funded project Research in Teacher Education that develops models of participative action research and practitioner enquiry for beginning teachers. This continues the aim of developing a more democratic approach to mathematics education, through collaborative, innovative lesson design, that considerers the emotional and cognitive aspects of learning. Empowering teachers, at all stages of experience, to use research to inform their professional judgement is a key part of her work.
Jonathan Hall

Jonathan Hall

Jonny has vast experience in mathematics teaching having taught secondary maths for over 13 years and counting. A former head of department, he is currently the lead practitioner at Leeds City Academy where he inspires students to get excited about learning mathematics. Jonny has also recently joined the Leading Learning Partnership team as a teaching and learning specialist. Having a keen interest in the development of online resources to advance learning, he created the StudyMaths and FlashMaths websites, and later founded the popular online tutor resources FormTimeIdeas.com. His latest project is the MathsBot.com website, where he offers the creation of virtual manipulatives and teaching tools to use in the classroom.
Kate Henshall

Kate Henshall

Kate is the Primary Maths Advisor for Trinity MAT, leading on improving mathematics for the primary schools within Trinity MAT. She is also the Assistant Maths Hub Lead for West Yorkshire Maths Hub leading on Teaching for Mastery Work Groups across Bradford, Calderdale and Leeds with a particular focus on Sustaining Teaching for Mastery and Mastering Number. Kate also works closely with the External Initiatives teams within Trinity MAT; White Rose Maths and Trinity Institute of Education. Kate has supported White Rose Maths to develop their schemes of learning, premium resources, assessment materials and CPD courses. Kate has also worked with Pearson to develop content for Power Maths.
Louise Hoskyns-Staples

Louise Hoskyns-Staples

Louise is an independent teacher educator. Her MSc thesis looked at the development of teacher understanding of how to teach fractions as well as the development of their subject knowledge. She works with a range of organisations always with the aim of improving outcomes for pupils in school.
Mark McCourt

Mark McCourt

The UK’s leading expert on the mastery approach, Mark is a leading figure in mathematics education, and has led many large-scale government education initiatives, both in the UK and overseas. Mark was a Director at the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and has also been a school leader, an Advanced Skills Teacher, a school inspector and a teacher trainer. He founded and was Chairman of the Teacher Development Trust and he is the CEO of Complete Mathematics, the UK’s largest network of mathematics teachers. He has extensive experience of mathematics teaching and learning across all age and ability groups, having taught students from age 3 to PhD.
Prof Anne Watson

Prof Anne Watson

Professor Watson taught mathematics in challenging schools for thirteen years before becoming a teacher educator and researcher at the University of Oxford. She advised on the NC for mathematics in England and also worked with the Welsh Assembly on a teacher-led mathematics curriculum. She works with teachers, teacher educators and researchers in every continent on mathematics curriculum, task design and pedagogy. She has published numerous books, articles and research papers about teaching mathematics, including ‘Questions and Prompts for Mathematical Thinking’ with John Mason & ‘Key Ideas in Teaching Mathematics’ with Keith Jones and Dave Pratt, published by Oxford University Press. Her long-term interest in the structures of mathematics and their role in learning, recognising and understanding concepts has led to critical engagement with ideas about variation, exemplification representation and concept-formation.
Sally Hall

Sally Hall

Sally works as a 0-19 School Improvement Consultant for Leeds City Council. In her current role she offers training and support to schools in the areas of EAL, Early Years and maths. This training and support has a language focus as it underpins and enables a child to learn and talk through their thinking, helping them to make sense of concepts and experiences. She is passionate about children enjoying and loving maths through stories, rhymes and a huge variety of resources and experiences. Sally is also a NCETM accredited professional development lead. Prior to this role she worked for 9 years as a classteacher in Leeds; teaching in EYFS and KS1. She had a variety of roles in schools including race equality and KS1 lead. Sally is also a KS1 accredited moderator and supports the assessment team with this work.
Sam Shutkever

Sam Shutkever

Sam is currently the Deputy Maths Hub Lead at the West Yorkshire Maths Hub. He has supported schools for the past 4 years as an SLE, as well as continuing to teach in KS2. He previously held a position of a Senior Leader in a Primary with high numbers of pupils with EAL and SEN. He is particularly interested in the role of problem solving in classrooms, as well as how to develop an understanding of mathematical structure for Primary School children.
