The Craft of Writing

The 2023 Leeds English and Literacy Conference will be a day of professional learning which senior leaders, subject leaders, lead practitioners, teachers and governors cannot afford to miss.  The day will be full of innovative opportunities to build on our 2022 conference and continue to develop writing opportunities for our children. 

We are delighted to welcome our keynotes:

Kelly Ashley, is a professional development facilitator, author of ‘Word Power’ and university lecturer. She is a specialist in the primary English curriculum with particular interests in reading for pleasure and vocabulary development.  Kelly will address how to develop vocabulary and ‘word power’, and how to engage children through exciting writing opportunities across the curriculum.

Barbara Bleiman, is a fiction writer, English teaching specialist and education consultant at the English and Media Centre.

Jennifer Webb, is an Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning at Trinity Academy Cathedral, a state secondary school in Wakefield. She is the author of the best-selling book, ‘How to Teach English Literature: Overcoming Cultural Poverty’ (2019).

There will be a comprehensive programme of workshops facilitated by local and regional school practitioners and independent organisations, including The Story Makers project team at Leeds Beckett University; staff from the British Library, Zara Shah and Charlotte Green, Learning and Teaching Specialists.

All of this will take place amongst the excellent facilities of Elland Road, Leeds and will be hosted by Leeds City Council School Improvement Team, who have a proven track record of delivering high impact professional learning.

Alongside the Conference there will be an exhibition of education suppliers and those companies wishing to exhibit at this popular event should kindly contact us as soon as possible as space is limited at the venue and stands can only be offered on a first come, first served basis.

The cost per Primary delegate is £210 for those from schools that have bought a 3, 5 day or 10 day learning improvement support package and £260 for those from non-support package schools and non-Leeds schools. Additional full day delegate places from the same school is £105 learning improvement support package and £130 non support package schools.

Secondary Leading Learning Partnership (LLP) schools have one prepaid place at this event and will be charged at the discounted rate of £105 for all additional delegate places.  Secondary non-LLP and non-Leeds schools will be charged £260 per delegate and £130 for all additional places from the same school.

Schools will be invoiced directly from Leeds City Council.

Event Speakers

Barbara Bleiman

Barbara Bleiman

Barbara has worked in education for over 40 years, as a teacher and expert on secondary English. As an education consultant at the English and Media Centre (EMC), she has led CPD courses, written publications for the classroom, blogged and spoken at many conferences and other events. In 2019 she received the National Association for the Teaching of English Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Teaching of English. Barbara is also a writer of fiction, having published two novels, Off the Voortrekker Road and Accidents of Love. She has had several stories published and has a new collection of short stories Kremlinology of Kisses coming out in the autumn, with Blue Door Press.

Jennifer Webb

Teacher, leader, author, blogger and speaker, Jennifer is currently Assistant Principal: Teaching, Learning and Staff Development at Co-op Academy Leeds, and has worked at a number of other schools in West Yorkshire, as a Head of English, an AST and a Lead Practitioner. She is the author of the best selling book, ‘How to Teach English Literature: Overcoming Cultural Poverty’ (2019) and ‘Teach Like a Writer’ (2020), both available on Amazon.

Kelly Ashley

With nearly 25 years of experience in education, Kelly Ashley (@kashleyenglish) has worked in in the US and UK as a teacher, school leader, professional development facilitator, coach and author. She currently works with schools and organisations across the UK and abroad, offering bespoke training and consultancy support on all aspects of the primary English curriculum. Kelly has a particular interest in reader identity and vocabulary development. Her first practical book for teachers, Word Power: Amplifying vocabulary instruction ,was published in 2019.
